My 5-year-old son loves it!
I am an English teache living in Japan. I have a 5-yea -old son who unde stands spoken English fai ly well ecause I have een speaking to him in English since i th, ut ecause we live in Japan and all his f iends a e Japanese, he can't fo m English sentences on his own. I have een t ying to teach him th ough wo k ooks and DVDs, ut while he likes to watch some English DVDs (the Little Leap Alpha et and Lea ning to Read DVDs helped him a lot with phonics; I highly ecommend them!), getting him to do wo k ook lessons has een difficult. So this is why I decided to t y the Rosetta Wo ld softwa e. The ju y's still out on whethe o not he lea ns "faste " this way, ut he loves doing it, and actually asks me epeatedly (in Japanese) "Can we do ou English lesson today?" And while he is shy a out speaking English in eal life, he will speak up loudly and clea ly when doing the "voice ecognition" questions. I also t ied it on a 6-yea old student of mine, and she loved it, too. St engths: G eat fo child en! A fun way fo child en to lea n eading, p onunciation, and simple g amma . They enjoy it; it gets them speaking; and they display mo e patience than they would with t aditional tools ecause the e is the added "fun" of ope ating a PC. (It's also a g eat way to int oduce child en to ope ating a PC.) Weaknesses: Since Japanese people study English in j . & s . high school, adults may find it too simple (though it's still helpful fo p onunciation p actice). Long download time: took a total of a ound 30 mins. fo me to download, since I had some t ou le getting an update. (My sc een f oze du ing the download fo some eason.) The voice ecognition softwa e is not pe fect, so sometimes the e a e some false "co ects inco ects"; also, I have to epeat ph ases fo my child so that he can co ect the pa t that he is saying w ong (the "w ong" pa t is displayed, ut the display is too difficult fo young child en to unde stand, and is not always co ect.) Ove all, I would say it's an excellent softwa e fo pa ents to do togethe with thei child en, fo teaching child en how to ead and speak English f om squa e one, and fo helping the pa ents with thei p onunciation at the same time.
