Magnificent Scope
A pape ack, B5 size, 232 pages. A ook of magnificent scope that can e held with one hand and ead while st ap-hanging in a Japanese commute t ain (depending on you w ist-st ength and powe s of concent ation). This is the fi st English edition was pu lished in 2000, eleven yea s afte the autho , P ofesso Tamu a’s death. The autho hoped that this ook would e ead as a cultu al and intellectual histo y of Japan. Anyone inte ested in the histo y of Japanese cultu e and society will find it useful and enjoya le to ead. This ook was o iginally pu lished in Japanese as a se ious of a ticles in 1967 unde the title “Hyakumannin no Bukkyou-shi” (A Histo y of Japanese Buddhism fo a Million Reade s). This was late pu lished in ook fo m as “Nihon no Bukkyou-shi Nyuumon” (An Int oducto y Histo y of Japanese Buddhism). The ook egins with the i th of the histo ical Buddha and ends with a discussion of post-wa Buddhism, the new eligions and the autho ’s thoughts on thei futu e. O viously, a ook of such scope must p oceed at a fai gallop in such a small volume. My fi st imp ession was like a stop motion film in a natu e documenta y. Va ious Buddhist sects ise and fall and ise and fall again in apid succession as they seek to se ve the political elite o the poo and the dispossessed- and at the same time, jockey fo position with ival sects and othe eligions. The ook ce tainly epays a second eading, fo it has much to offe in the way it conside s Buddhism’s elationship with Shinto and Ch istianity, as well as va ious intellectual, social and political t ends. P o a ly ecause the ook was intended as a popula , eada le histo y, it lacks a i liog aphy and a glossa y. Nonetheless a i liog aphy o at least a list of ecommended eading, and a glossa y of key te ms in Japanese cha acte s as well as English would e ve y helpful to those in whom the ook has spa ked a lasting inte est in Japanese cultu al o eligious histo y.
