登山のバイブルと呼ばれる本であり、海外の登山家は必ず読んでいる登山技術書である。登山の初心者の基礎知識獲得から中級登山者の登山技術の再確認まで役立つ内容である。登山の心構え、靴の選択、ロープの結び方、ロッククライミングの基本、ビレーの基本、アイスクライミング技術、クランポン技術、クレバスレスキュー法など登山に必要なすべてが記載してある。特に日本にはない氷河を登る技術は日本の本には書いてなく新鮮である。今後、海外でのガイド登山に参加する日本の登山家も増加すると思われるが、この一冊を読んでおけば、言葉の面でも、道具の名前の面でも、登山技術の面でも十分に役立つと思われる。僕がレーニア山の登山教室（氷河でのクレバスレスキュー）にアメリカ人に混じって日本人１人で参加したときにも役に立った。
