The ground is dark with blood
With many ooks, t anslations a e negligi le, with two o vious exceptions, one is the Bi le, and su p isingly the othe is The Iliad. Fo example: "Rage--Goddess, sing the age of Peleus’ son Achilles, Mu de ous, doomed, that cost the Achaeans countless losses, hu ling down to the House of Death so many souls, g eat fighte s’ souls. But made thei odies ca ion, feasts fo dogs and i ds, and the will of Zeus was moving towa ds its end. Begin, Muse, when the two fi st oke and clashed, Agamemnon lo d of men and illiant Achilles." -T anslated y Ro e t Fagles “Sing, O Goddess, the ange of Achilles, son of Peleus, that ought countless ills upon the Achaeans. Many a ave soul did it send hu ying down to Hades, and many a he oes did it yield a p ey to dogs and vultu es fo so we e the counsels of Zeus fulfilled f om the day on which the son of At eus, king of men, and g eat Achilles fi st fell out with one anothe .” -T anslated y Samuel Butle Ou sto y takes place in the ninth yea of the ongoing wa . We get some int oduction to the fi st nine yea s ut they a e just a ackg ound to this tale of p ide, so ow and evenge. The sto y will also end a uptly efo e the end of the wa . We have the wide conflict etween the T ojans and Achaeans ove a matte of p ide; the gods get to take sides and many times di ect spea s and shields. Although the mo e focused conflict is the powe st uggle etween two diffe ent types of powe . That of Achilles, son of Peleus and the g eatest individual wa ie and that of Agamemnon, lo d of men, who’s powe comes fo m position. We a e t eated to a low y low inside sto y as to what each is thinking and an unva nished desc iption of the pe ils of wa .
The Iliad
This so-called myth w itten y Home , a G eek poet takes place a ound the yea 1440 B.C. This sto y talks a out the ealities of wa , love, f iendship, and most impo tantly, sadness. It mostly talks a out what's happening on Mt. Olympus (the place whe e the G eek gods live), the f iendship etween Achilles and Pat oclus, and finally the diffe ent fights that occu th oughout the ten yea s of utality. Although most people think that the Iliad contains eve ything that happened du ing the T ojan wa , it isn't the case. This ook is only the fi st pa t of the ten-yea wa . The Odyssey is the second and final pa t of this wa . What's fa ulous a out this t anslated ve sion of the Iliad y Ro e t Fagles is that it can e ead y child en and adults. The e a e two easons why it is eada le fo anyone. One eason is that the Iliad is exciting to the pe son who eads it and the pe son won't put the ook down. The second eason is that fo the pe son who has an inte est in eading a out ancient myths, its extensiveness is satisfying. Also it has an extended glossa y, maps, notes, and one-sentence desc iptions of all the cha acte s. I ecommend this ook to people who a e inte ested in ancient G eek myths.
