時代は常に変革して行く
本書は著者達が当時の超優良企業の成功の秘訣を徹底的に分析し、纏めたもの。企業人の間ではベストセラーとなり、私も会社の研修で読んだ。 IBMが年一回成績優秀者パーティを開いて、社員の一体感を醸成している等、日本型経営をしているのに驚いた記憶があるが、今振り返ると、当たり前の事を当たり前に言っていると思える点が多い。この時、超優良企業として挙げられた企業の中で今は消えている会社も多い。 時代は常に変革しているのである。インターネットの普及等に伴い、新しいビジネス・モデルが次々と登場している。著者達もその後、「Visiona y Company」という新しい概念(先を見通した確固たる方針を持っている会社の意か)を出している程である。しかし、先が見えないビジネスの世界では、一定の経営方針を立てるのには無理がある。本書はその事を身を持って実証した書。
equity cultureが前面に出てくる直前のアメリカ
若者は恥を知りません。そして無駄を繰り返します。私にとっては、この本も、この命題の証明のようなものです。こんな本を赤線を引いて読んでいた時代があったんですね。当時（８０年代前半）、この本は、毎週、timeのweekly estselle の上位をしめ、売れに売れた本です。どうしてこんな本が売れたのでしょうか。同じような時期に、やはり売れた本としては、michael po te のcompetitive st ategyがあります。こちらのほうは、経済学のacademicなja gonを使い、ドライで抽象度の高い議論を展開することにより、一部での高い評価を得ていた記憶があります。おそらくpo te 流の議論へのアンチテーゼとしてこの作品は受け止められたのでしょう。まずこの作品には、数式やマトリクスがほとんど使われていません。もっぱら定性的な議論により著者のテーゼは提示されていきます。そう、定性的な議論は誰でも応用できます。したがってセミナーでp e- eading mate ialsとして渡されても、読むのは簡単です。実際の中身はというと、悲しいくらい空虚な作品です。新入社員が入社の際、社長から受ける訓辞とほぼ同じ中身です。そこには真実があるのですが、これは紙に書かれた形で読んで理解しても何の意味もない真実なのです。ましてや大学でまじめにこの本を取り上げたり、赤線を引くなんて。そう真実は単純です。でも分析したり整理したりものではないのです。新しく読もうとする人へのアドヴァイスは、どの程度、この中で取り上げた会社が現在生き残っているのかという角度から読んでください。

超優良企業を創る根源は経営理念にある。
企業の経営理念の大切さについて豊富な体験・実例と共に述べられた好著。是非、「ビジョナリー・カンパニー」とセットで読んで欲しい。古典とも言える程昔の本だが、その内容は古くなるどころか近年ますます重要性を増していると言えるだろう。
