素晴らしい挿絵とともに読む「シルマリルの物語」
Ted Nasmith が美麗なカラー挿絵45枚をつけた「シルマリルの物語」原書ハードカバーで、 2004年に出版されました。 べレリアンドと北方諸国のA2大カラー折込地図もついています。 Nasmith挿絵のThe Silma illion は1998年にも出版されていますが、本書では 挿絵の数が大きく増えていますし、The Silma illion 自体、 1999年に second edition に改訂されており（トールキンが1951年に 書いた手紙が巻頭に付加され、幾らかテキストの誤りの改訂が行われています）、 この新しい挿絵版 The Silma illion も second edition 準拠になりましたので、 旧挿絵版を既に持っている方にもお奨めできます。 Ted Nasmith の挿絵は、内容的には暗かったり生臭い場面を描いている物でも、 風景や建物などは壮美で、その対比が印象的です。バラヒア一党が殺される場所である、 タルン・アイルインの絵では星空映る湖面の美しさに、アルクウァロンデ「白鳥港」で ノルドールがテレリ族を襲う同族殺害場面の絵では、船と建物がランプと 星空の薄明かりで透き通るように映えた美しさに、目を奪われます。 これら、いずれ劣らぬ鑑賞しがいのある45枚の挿絵とともに、トールキンの 壮大な神話世界を読める本書は満足度の高い一冊で躊躇なく星5つです。
Tolkienの世界に浸るならこれ
冒頭では世界の創造と神々の活躍が描かれ、それ以降は不死の国からミドルアースに渡ったエルフの一族、Noldo の悲劇が中心となっています。 中盤からは人間も絡んできて、彼らとの混血から後代の重要人物が輩出されていることがわかって妙に納得しますよ。 確かに登場人物が多くて、しかも名前が似ているので頭がごっちゃになります。 家系図もついていますが、The complete guide to middle-ea thが手元にあると安心かもしれません。 正直言って、最初読んだときは眠い本でした。（特に冒頭） でもThe lo d of the ingsも含めて再度読み返してみると、めちゃくちゃ面白いのです。 やはり世界観があまりにも壮大なので、一回読んだだけでは理解しきれないんだと思います。 私は、The lo d of the ings→The ho it→The silma illion→Unfinished tales→The ook of lost tales→The lo d of the ings→The silma illionの順番で読みました。 それにしても、Tolkienにはちょっと選民思想があるような。 私たちはeaste ingsなのかしら?と思うと複雑な気分です。
恐れたほど難しくはありませんでした。
Lo d of the Rings を読んでから、どうしてもエルフや、Elde Daysのことを知りたくて読んでみました。あちこちで言われているほど、読みにくくはありません。と言うよりも、本の世界に引き込まれてしまって、そんなことは感じる暇もありませんでした。索引がついているので、人名や地名など、すぐ調べられるし、昔のMiddle-Ea thの地図もあるので、これがまた楽しみです。自分でもValino の地図を書いてみたりして、想像がふくらみました。 どこかに、Valino の詳しい地図はないものでしょうか？

今だから尚更おもしろい
ＷＴＣテロ事件から遡ること10年近く、こんな作品が書かれていた。ラドラムの作品は常にフィクションでありながら、よほどリサーチがしっかりしているのか現実的な緊迫感がある。それゆえ、10年近くたった今でも、あれ程のリアルな事件を目の当たりにした後でも、ひとつの作品として色褪せない。 p 女性テロリストの策略と背景にうごめく闇組織の設定がラドラムにしては少々精巧さに欠ける印象。むしろこの作品では、著者のもうひとつの得意技、テロリストの狂信的な心性や欲や権力に囚われる人の弱さといったところはよく描かれている。 p 某過激派集団は既に歴史になり、例の新興宗教団体はただの変質者集団とみなされる暢気な日本では、世界中にテロをめぐる危機が延々と渦巻いている現実がつい忘れられる。多民族共存の環境で国際情勢にも敏感なアメリカだから、フィクションであっても質が高いものが生まれるのか、と思ってしまう。ラドラムの作品全般にいえるが、日本ではこうした作品はまず生まれないだろう。
