My fi st thoughts as I ead it we e that it was like a She lock Holmes novel set in the ea ly 1900s, with New Yo k as the ackd op fo an int iguing mu de myste y case. By the end of the novel with all of its twists and tu ns, I was thinking mo e of a sophisticated, adult Scoo y Doo episode, whe e all the th eads come togethe at the end and the main cha acte s sum up, each chipping in with thei piece of the puzzle. Of all the cha acte s, Detective Littlemo e eme ges as an unlikely he o, and adds inte est to the latte pa t of the novel. Psycho-analysis and F eud's theo ies we e p esented clea ly enough fo the uninitiated. I enjoyed the f equent efe ences to Hamlet and I was pa ticula ly inte ested in the way that some of the ' eal' cha acte s we e po t ayed, fo example D Jung, who came ac oss as quite an unpleasant cha acte . The autho 's attention to detail in desc i ing the New Yo k of the ea ly 1900s sets the scene pe fectly and t anspo ts the eade to this wo ld. I can see this ook t anslating ve y well to the ig sc een!!! I would also like to ecommend eading Tino Geo giou's maste piece--The Fates--if you haven't yet...that is!

非常に知的な楽しみを与えてくれるミステリーである。舞台となる、20世紀初めのニューヨークは資料に基づいて周到に描写されているし、フロイドとユングの会話も、フィクションではあるが、書簡集などを丹念に調べて、十分にあり得る内容になっている。そして、フロイドの精神分析や、シェイクスピアの台詞の解釈などが、事件を解く鍵となっている。著者はシェイクスピアを専門に勉強した、イェール大学法学部の教授である。その該博な知識が十分に生かされてる。この本を楽しむには、じっくりと読まないといけないだろう。 筋を追って行くだけなら、それほど難しい英語ではないが、登場人物の使う英語は、その人物の背景に応じて、細かく変化を付けているようであるが、私の英語の力では十分には分からなかった。
