Despite a slight tendency to lectu e in places athe than tell the sto y, the autho ca ies his imp o a le plot so well that the pages seem to tu n themselves. This th ille is in the vein of The Quest y Gio gio Kostantinos and Da Code y Dan B own. The sto yline is flowing and causes just the ight amount of anxiety fo ou he os the histo ical facts (hopefully they a e facts, ecause that痴 how I am eading them) a e fascinating and info mative, the conjectu es o conclusion a e int iguing and push one to find out mo e a out the possi ilities evealed. I actually found the action mo e ealistic and mo e within the ealms of possi ility that DaVinci Code, mo e like Fusion which also p esented itself in a ve y ealistic, elieva le and easie to accept manne . アドベンチャーホラー
アマゾンの奥地で瀕死の男が神父に救助される。舌を失っており何もしゃべることなく死んでしまった男の体には、現地人が恐れる刺青があった。それは幻の部族の死のシンボル。彼は４年前にRand博士の一行とともにアマゾンで消息を絶ったＣＩＡのエージェントCla kであることが判明する。しかも驚いたことに、４年前出発した時に既に失っていた片腕が「生えて」いたのだ。 ４年前に行方不明になったRand博士の一行は、その後の捜索にもかかわらず、全く手がかりがなかったが、Cla kが生きていたことから、再度捜索隊が結成される。もちろん、片腕の謎を解明することも大きな使命だ。捜索隊にはRand博士の息子、医者、ＣＩＡのエージェント、製薬会社の社員、そして現地のエキスパートが参加する。 しかし万全を期したはずだった一行を待ち受けていたのは、想像を絶する恐怖の連続だった。Ｂ級といえばＢ級ですが、非常にテンポよく展開するアドベンチャーホラー。「恐怖の連続」は、非常に想像しやすく、わかりやすい。巨大化したワニとかね。最後のびっくり結末まで、まるで映画を観るように楽しめる小説です。

99年発表の作者デビュー作。 探検物、パニック物、ＳＦ物、更にはファンタジーやロマンス等あらゆるジャンルの全ての要素を取り入れた欲張りテンコ盛り路線。マスマーケット最新作“The Judas St ain”もそうでしたが、デビュー作からして既に、余りに山盛りで何が何だか分らないお腹一杯状態だったのですね。 たらふく食いさえすれば満足なのかという疑問は残りますが、これだけ食えれば少なくとも大きな損はないという、実に微妙な感想です。

南極大陸の地下、そこには世界が注目する魅力的な資源があるはず。しかし、地下から発見されたのは、なんとダイヤモンドで彫られた精巧な彫刻。一体氷の大陸の下には何があるのか？誰による彫刻なのか？ 各部門の科学者が集められ、探検隊が出発する。しかし探検隊は彼らが最初ではなかった。彼らの前に出発したチームは戻らなかったのだ。地下で待っているのは何者なのか？彼らを待っていたのは想像を超えた恐怖に満ちた地底の世界だった。 アドベンチャーホラー、またはＳＦチックアドベンチャーが得意な作者のデビュー作です。 面白くないわけではないのでけれど、中盤から、本来のアドベンチャー路線から、よくある映画のように登場人物の恋愛ものがからみ、ストーリー展開がだらけるのが残念。ちょっと超常現象もからみます。このあたりは読者サービスなのでしょうか？ まあ、看板に偽りがあるわけではなく、この手の作品が好きな人には及第といったところではないでしょうか？

This is the fi st of Rollins' ooks that I've ead, and I'll ce tainly check out his othe s. It misses 5 sta s only ecause I couldn't quite enjoy the love-t iangle that was c ammed into this othe wise well-paced ook. This ook is a th ille in Indiana Jones fo m. As it takes place in the Middle East, fo the most pa t, it is just ef eshing (the fellow has o viously een in a dese t). G eat details, fantastic mood, with a style that is so evocative of the epic style that makes ig movies, with all the t immings: Ancient technology, myste y, and some cleve little twists.
