Saw the play, couldn't get into the book
The ook feels like a th ow ack to the age of ove ly-complex names and simple fantasy. I like those as I g ew up on them. Th ow in ad wo ds, unpleasant cha acte s, sex, and it just doesn't inspi e me to finish, howeve . Yeah, I didn't finish this ook, an a andonment I've only ese ved fo a few ooks. The pace just doesn't pick up, the cha acte s don't have saving g aces. I suppose if you a e a cynic then this would e fo you. It's like fantasy fo people that want to give it a slick, w y, ugly cast. Watch the play, as it's quite good. Pass on this thing.

I picked up this ook afte hea ing my f iend ave a out "Wicked" he saw on B oadway, which was ased on this ook. But the ook tu ned out to e something much mo e than what I had expected. Issues of ace, politics, sexualiy, social class, education, etc. etc. So many unde lying messages and depth and eflection on ou society and histo y. It also makes me want to pick up the Wiza d of Oz, and pay mo e attention to the Wicked Witch of the West. We all know a out Do othy and he dog, the Sca ec ow, Lion, and Tinman. I eally enjoyed how Magui e gave Elpha a (the Witch) a complex pe sonality that is elieva le and inte esting, and also p aise him fo his powe ful imagination. Afte eading this one, I will definitely e checking out his othe novels too.
