Joanne Do son's myste y of academia is a passa le ook. It ce tainly wasn't unpleasant to ead, ut I don't feel I gained much f om eading it. Most of the facts in the life of Edga Allan Poe we e known to me p io to eading this novel, ut since the Poe connection was what d ew me to the ook, I can't help ut feeling a little cheated. That's my issue, though, not you s. p Main cha acte Ka en Pelletie is innocuous enough, and the ook is at it's most inte esting in the class oom scenes, whe e Do son is a le to inject some life into Pelletie 's dialog. Othe than that, she's just a ham-fisted academic t ying to act sly when asked to question he fellow p ofesso s afte the mu de of a colleague. p I didn't get a ead on any of the othe cha acte s at Enfield College. Most we e academic a chetypes athe than t ue cha acte s. I was neithe int igued no inte ested in the petty squa ling and ca't get ehind any mu de motivated y achieving tenu e. p The love inte est cop is an okay guy, sma t in a Matlock kind of way, which is to say that he seems dum on fi st meeting. Unfo tunately, it will e my only eading ecause this ook just didn't g a me and make me want to ead the est of the se ies. p On a semi- elated note, it's kind of sad that some people have uilt ce tain lite a y figu es up to the point that they a e una le to see his flaws. Poe was a deeply flawed man, ve y whiny and of du ious cha acte . He eally did many of the things of which Do son accuses him. That makes him no less a genius, no less fascinating.

残念デュラック
ちょっと残念な本でした。ポーの詩にかのデュラック様のカラー挿絵が付いてしかもハードカバーでこのお値段。これはもう、買うしか・・って買ったけれど、「ア、やっぱり値段と吊り合ってるかも（悪い意味で）」と肩をガックリ落としてしまいました。 印刷があんまり良くないんです、まず。紙もなんだかペラペラしていて、ハードカバーといいながらも、「これより質のいいソフトカバーってけっこうあるよね！？」と思ってしまいました。（実際、最近の私はソフトカバー洋書を見直しつつあります。そっちの方がいい場合が案外多いのだ） デュラックの絵自体も、「これが彼氏の絵なの！？」て驚いてしまいました。『人魚姫』や『千夜一夜』や『シンデレラ』みたいなのを期待してたら嗚呼！暗いトーンと前から聞いていたし、それは別に、「ポーの挿絵だしそれでも結構」と思ってたんだけど、あかんわ。これは。 いや、「あかん」ことは確かにないんだけど、デュラックの「味」が、消えている・・。暗いトーンだと渋さが出て余計いいのかな〜と思ってたんだけどネ。 ・・と、愚痴ばかり言ってしまいましたが、決して悪本というわけではありませんので。ただ、いつものように彼の絵に「酔う」などということはちょっと期待しないで下さい・・。
挿絵・装丁も立派
エドガー・アラン・ポーの詩にエドマンド・デュラックの挿絵３９枚（カラー２８枚）を付けた大型本。「The Bells」「A D eam with in a D eam」「The City in the Sea」「Ulalume」等、４６の詩が入っています。ほとんどの挿絵が「夜」をベースにした暗色で描かれているので、明るい色彩のデュラックを好む方は拍子抜けするかもしれません。が、暗色系でも繊細で幻想的な作品が多く、デュラックの「静と闇」を見るチャンスともいえそうです。以前はもっと高額でしたが、ハードカバーでこの値段でしたらかなりお得な一品です。
