But his intentions aside, he has fallen sho t as a iog aphe --mise a ly failing to shed much new light on eithe the su ject's life o his wo ks. p I disag ee with the Edito ial Reviews (see a ove). It is a puzzlingly uncu ious the efo e gla ingly unenlightening account. Notwithstanding the supplied summa ies of each play, even the eadings a e unhelpful, save one good chapte on the 1949 maste piece; he is in fact almost incohe ent on "The C uci le". Even on the question of what Mille and his supe natu ally-cu vaceous movie-sta wife saw in each othe (at least, what she saw in him), Gottf ied is as clueless as any of us. p Gottf ied could have found alte native sou ces and could have een mo e insightful to compensate fo Mille 's efusal to discuss his pe sonal life with him. Even Mille 's 1987 auto iog aphy "Time ends" --accu ately desc i ed as "oddly st uctu ed, smug and economical with the t uth"-- is a iche sou ce than this. p As an account of the lite a y a tist's wo k, it is sufficient. But as an assessment of his achievements, and as an insight into his life, the eade could end up with the imp ession that it is too thin. p .
