フライパンのとって
この小説の舞台，テキサスのパンハンドル地方は「フライパンのとって」，平野から突き出した細長い土地，という意味だそうです．この地方で牧場の牛のために多数設置されたアメリカ風車（多数の羽根がついたタイプ）を立てたり修理したりする人が登場する，という個人的な興味がこの本を買った理由です．風車の仕事は何十メートルもある高いところでするたいへんな仕事で，しかも点在する風車を直して回るために，一度家を出たら何日も戻れません．そんな風車修理の仕事をしてきた老人がこの小説のキーパーソンですが，物語の主人公はデンバーからきた青年です．会社の命令で養豚場用の土地を買うのが目的です．牛を育てることを誇りにしてきた土地柄で，「ブタの土地を売って」といっても相手にされないので，彼は社長の命令で「豪華な家のための土地を探している」とうそをつかなければなりません． p 土地を手放したいと思っている人に出会うために彼は町のひとびとの日常に積極的に入り込もうとします．この土地に祖父やその父の代から１００年以上に渡って住んできた人々の生活や生き様，こだわりやどうしようもない哀しさ，が美しく荒々しい自然の描写の中でいきいきとしかしコミカルに描かれます．これがこの小説の面白いところでしょう． p 会社から早く土地を見つけろ，と催促されるなか，ようやく彼は土地を売ってもいいと思っている２，３の人たちに目星をつけます．ところが彼等に「うん」といわせるには，あの風車の仕事をしている老人が承諾しなければならない，という事情がだんだんと分かってきてます．青年が老人に話をつけに行こうとする終盤，次々といろいろなこと起こって物語は一気に盛り上がってすばらしい結末を迎えるのです．

五感に訴える詩の世界
ニューファンドランドというところは、海と風と岩、冬は氷ばかりの、とにかく自然の厳しいところらしい。そしてそこで生きている人々にも厳しい現実と歴史がある。ミステリーのように徐々に明らかにされる主人公クオイルの一族のおぞましい歴史は、日本なら「犬神家の一族」といったところか。 でも筋の面白さより、何といっても文章がすごい。海のにおい、風の冷たさ、潮風のべたつき、湿気のこもった船室のなかにいる人間の髪におい、海水の冷たさ、吹き付ける風の音、料理の味、子どもの声、水死体のふやけ具合（！）・・・そういうものが読むたびに押し寄せてきて圧倒される。 心から口惜しいのは、英語が難しいうえに船の部分の名称がたくさん出てきて、私にはとうてい全部は理解できなかったことです。
翻訳がシンドソウ
主人公／文体の成長がテーマ。主人公が書く記事、地の文の描写のテクスチュアが、お互いに交差しつつ、変容し、再構築される。主人公がボンクラっていう設定なんで見通しが利かないっす（ニューファンドランドの曇った空と同じで）。ミニマリズムっぽい語り口なんだけど、底を見せず／壁にぶち当たることもなく、突き詰めることもなく。ニューファンドランドの荒涼とした風景描写とともに、一族の記憶、過去／現在の事故、香港への闘争等、意外に豊かな仕掛けもあって、話が広がっていく仕掛け。訳者の苦労は偲ばれるが。文体がテーマとなっている部分がどこまで訳せたものか、難しいんだよね、これが。
希望の素晴らしさ
予想とは異なる本でした。 一つの物語というよりも、短編が 100編以上も出来そうな人間くさいエピソードの集積といった方が適切かもしれません。主人公の善良さと愚かさによって、悲劇の喜劇的な側面が強調され、全体としてはコミカルだという印象です。一つのテーマを深く考察することで読者を引き込む本ではなく、雑多な話題を多数取り扱うことで読者の興味をつないでいく本だと思います。モチーフとして取り上げられている人間の残虐性に対する深い考察は無いので、意外にサラッと読めました。主人公のクオイル（主人公のファーストネームは殆ど明らかにされない）は、フォレスト・ガンプのようなヒーローだと思います。人生に悲劇はつきものですが、希望さえ失わなければなんとかなるのでは、という気持ちになりました。良い本だと思います。

とりたてて大きな転機があるわけではない、自分に自信が持てない不器用な男が自分の居るべき場所を発見する物語。 いや実は、溺れかけたり、家が飛んじゃったり、事件があるのにあえてそれを淡々と描いて、島の人々との日常や厳しく美しい風景が彼を変えて行くのだと語るところに、エンターティンメントではない「小説」としての魅力を感じます。 視点が主に主人公本人なのに、突然叔母など他の人間に切り替わるところがあって少しわかりにくい。叔母の人物が興味深いだけに惜しい気がします。
