筆者自身これまでカラーやモノクロームを含めてずいぶんたくさんの写真集に親しんできたが、これほどいつ見ても新鮮で美しい写真集は稀有な存在だと言っていいかもしれない。これはまさにカラーフォトグラフィーの一つの頂点ともいうべき作品である。

見える世界と見えない世界
キンケイドの作品はほとんど読んだが、中でもキンケイドの自伝的作品であるAnnie Johnは特に気に入っている。カリブの照りつける太陽、青空、海、トロピカルフルーツや魚などの強烈な色彩が描かれる一方で、性・人種差別などの抑圧やオービアマジックといった目に見えない世界が確かに存在することもアニーが淡々と語ってゆく。そのあまりに日常的な語り口にさらりと読めそうな作品だが、一語一語に潜んでいるまさに目に見えない世界をキンケイドは詩と言っても過言ではない、実に美しい散文で描いてゆく。私がキンケイドに魅せられる理由の１つに、彼女のこの詩的な散文が挙げられる。キンケイドの歯切れの良い文章の裏にある、強烈な皮肉、特に植民地主義への皮肉は痛快。目に見えるものが全てではない、目に見えないものに真実があるかもしれない。目に見えるものが全てだったアニーが自分の!!核であった母親の、目に見えていなかった部分を知り、反抗しつつもその愛情を欲し、成長してゆく過程は、誰しも思い当たる節があることだろう。
