超ユーモラスなアメリカ旅行記
アメリカンライフスタイルが満喫できるこの本は空想旅行家の皆様には絶対お勧めです。普通旅行者が訪れることのない、米国の田舎町（ニューヨークやグランドキャニオンも出てきますが）の風景と生活が面白おかしく紹介されています。作者の子供時代の回想としてでてくる古きよきアメリカも昔の映画を見ているようです。アメリカの生活と文化にどっぷり浸りたいときに。
アメリカの田舎が好きな人に！
この本は著者が最初に出した本です。今でこそ半ば「旅行記ライター」と化している彼ですが、本書は旅行そのものよりも、旅行をきっかけにして子供時代の思い出や故郷に対する思いを語る、というもので、かなりのノスタルジーを漂わせています。元々イギリスで出た本のせいか、皮肉やブラックユーモアが利いています。人によってはそれを悪意と受け取ってしまい、楽しさが理解できないということがあるようですが、私にはとても楽しいものでした。著者がこの旅行をしたのは1987年の秋と1988年の春で、個人的には私もこの頃アメリカの田舎に留学していたので、その意味でもこの本で描かれていることに「そうそう！」と共感できた面もあります。 p なお、この本はイギリス版とアメリカ版で少し違いがあり、アメリカ版で（叩かれる恐れがありそうな）「危ない」記述が省かれています。でも、そういう部分こそが「面白い」ので、できればアメリカ版でなくイギリス版を買うことをお薦めします。
Bryson Missed the Boat
I was so eage to ead this ook afte having ead 'Made In Ame ica.' I couldn't have een mo e disappointed. M . B yson has a w iting style and humo that makes him most enjoya le to ead. Howeve , somewhe e etween his adopted land of England and the land of his i th, Iowa, he got lost. What I thought would e a tongue-in-cheek look at t avelling in Ame ica tu ned into a tho ough ashing that seemed mo e aimed at eassu ing B itain of its supe io ity ove 'the colonies.' It's too ad he couldn't see the fo est fo the t ees and chose, instead, to exploit and pe petuate inaccu ate ste eotypes. I'm su e he missed out on the wonde ful things that the simple people of No th Ame ica had to offe him. Not his cup of tea, what? By the way, I'm not an Ame ican and hold no pa ticula desi e to defend it ut I was offended y the tone M . B yson took fo the sake of t ying to get a laugh.
