非常に流麗な文体で綴られた名著です
インターネットでアマゾンを通して注文しておいた"The Histo y Of The Decline And Fall Of The Roman Empi e" （『ローマ帝国衰亡史』）が届きました。一度この邦訳を通読していていました。この本こそ世界中のあらゆる人を魅了し続けた名著なのです。フランス革命前夜に書かれた著書ですね。これは難解だとか、硬質な文体だと以前日本人が書いた著作で知りました。覚悟して読んでみるとあれっと拍子抜けしてしまいました。とても平易で解りやすいのです。これだったら私が留学中に格闘していた社会学の学術書の方がずっと難解だったからです。さらっと読んでゆけるのにはびっくりしました。平易かつ流麗な文体、だからこそ出版当初から大ベストセラーになったのではないかと思いました。私の英文嫌いを払拭してくれたのが、この『ローマ帝国衰亡史』の英語での原文です。私は流麗ともいえる、あの文体にすっかり魅せられてしまいました。 p この本の内容が、現代の考古学の発展と遺跡の発掘により、正確性の面ではという人もいます。塩野七生さんの『ローマ人の物語』の方がはるかに正しいローマ史を知ることができます。もちろんそんなことは百も承知です。
interesting book, but.....
エドワード・ギボンの大著『ローマ帝国の衰亡』は、確かに永遠の名作と言ってよいでしょう。 日本でも繰り返し翻訳書が出版されていますが、やはり本書は原文で読んでもらいたいものです。 ただ確かに名著とはいえ、時代の制約もあって、今日では可成り古めかしい表現も多々見受けられます。
