Diana Wynne Jones gives all he usual est to make the ook a good ead - the e is of cou se magic, humou , lots of cats, some chee ful, and some wicked cha acte s topped up with the inimita le ig man - Ch estomanci himself. As usual, too, the sto y focuses athe on the child en, with matu ing Cat Chant and a new cha acte Ma ianne Pinhoe among othe s, g owing up to thei gifts and uilding self-confidence to use thei skills. But the e is also some new quality to it that was eithe not p esent o no so clea in the p evious ooks. He e the magic is mo e connected at the g ass oots, and mo e in the alance with the est of the wo ld, taking in the good with the ad, lea ning to tole ate and espect the othe , invisi le unive se. This shift in the wo ldview eminds me st ongly of U sula Le Guin's 'The Othe Wind', and as such may appeal also to an olde audience. Without spoiling the sto y, Wynne Jones is also quite c itical of lind, unquestioning faith and might spa k a cont ove sy o a lively de ate among some eade s, making the se ies even mo e inte esting. Highly ecommended.

地元では一番高いランクの地位を占め、父とふたりすきなように生きている、主人公エマ。いい育ちで、地位や礼儀にうるさく、結構澄ました印象を与えるヒロインですが、その優しさや素直さに惹かれずにはいられません。心配性で年配の父親の性格も災いして、あまり遠出をせず、出会いがないこのヒロインは、今の人生が気に入っており、一生結婚はしないとのこと。16歳年上のM .Knightley（姉の夫の兄）の友情と、4つ年下のHa iet Smithの崇拝、姉夫婦とこどもたち、最近結婚したばかりの元家庭教師ー（ウェストン夫婦）の輪のなかで、心地よく暮らしていたのですが、ご近所の姪のMiss.Fai fax, ウェストン氏の今は亡き最初の奥さんとの息子M .F ank Chu chillが地元High u yの輪に加わってから、環境が少しずつ変わっていきます。 高慢と偏見とは違い、ロマンスは知らぬうちに物語に組み込まれていて、なかなか姿を見せません。エマの恋愛メインと言ったよりは、High u yの生活、まわりの人々の生活や謎といったものが前半、中盤と主なテーマになっています。 あまり重要でないように見えるおしゃべりな脇役のせりふが長いところがあったり（２ページ以上も続くことも！）、最初こそしばしば早く展開が無いかなあ、読むのやめようかなあと何度も思いましたが、 読み続けてよかった！！ 後半、最後の最後で主人公エマの恋愛に本当の展開があり、引き込まれてしまいました。 ロマンス好きには特にたまらないでしょう。 古典として敬遠していましたが、今作も期待を裏切られず、本当に面白かった。高慢と偏見などがすきだった人には、ぜひ読んでほしい一作です。Jane Austenをまだ読んだことがない人は、他の作品から入った方が作者をすきになれるかもしれませんーエマはとにかく長く、展開がなかなか無いので！

この本を読み、アンネが窮地にたたされてもくじけず頑張りとおすことのできる少女だと感じた。まずアンネは人種差別がなかったら、裕福な暮らしを送り続けていて、何不自由に感じることは無かったはずだ。でも閉塞状況に立たされ、初めて自分の内面的なことも見つめられるようになる。そして、アンネはさびしく苦しい隠れが生活の中で幸せになれる日を願い続け、自己凝視を続けていった。これが、私的なこの本のまとめであります。
