少し奇妙で怖い世界を描く短編集
ブラッドベリの初期の短編集で19の短編が収録されている。表題のOcto e Count yについては冒頭で説明があり、その国はいつも年の後半で、岡や川は霧に包まれ、昼間は短く黄昏の時間が長くて真夜中が続き、秋に染まった人々が暮らしており、雨の様な足音で夜中に通り過ぎるそうだ。 原文を下手な日本語に訳したのでよく意味がわからないと思うが、とにかくこの短編集で描かれるのは何れも奇妙な人々で、結構怖い話が多い。正直言って、2話目のThe Next In Lineでもう読むのをやめようかと思ったが、4話目のSkeleton辺りからだんだんこの不思議な世界にはまっていき、結局最後まで読み終えてしまった。 心温まるような話は殆どなく、怖かったり、気持ち悪かったり、物悲しくなったりする話が殆どであるが不思議な魅力を持った短編集だと思います。
