But he somehow fails to captu e the MAXIMUM poignant mood that Mu ay's sto ies can othe wise evoke . . . o pe haps fo these types of sto ies, the unaided mind is simply much mo e fe tile, thus making the ook ette . p .

ダークタワー第1巻
キングにしては、短めの話ですが、英語で読んでも分かり難かったです。 回想シーンが何度も出てくるのですが、場面転換が分かりにくい箇所が何箇所かあり、また出てくる人物が多いので、何の話をしているのか訳が分からなくなります。 物語自体は、まだまだ導入部といった感じです。
ハードボイルドワンダーランド
「ブラック・ハウス」や「アトランティスのこころ」（共に新潮文庫）を読んでいると、「暗黒の塔」が絡んだエピソードが登場してきます。本書の「はじめに」を読むと「暗黒の塔」はキングのライフワークらしいので、このモチーフが他の小説でも使われているのでしょうね。翻訳の文体が乾いた硬派なタッチとなっており、いつものキングの小説っぽくなくて、ひたすらクールです。「ガンスリンガー」とは拳銃使いのことを指すそうです。そのため西部劇のめっぽう強いアウトローをヒーローにした小説のような渋い味わいが楽しめます。全７部という長大なシリーズ。日本では現在第４部まで角川文庫で読めるのですが、読み出したら止まらない面白さがあります。
キングの原点
キングのライフワークといわれる「暗黒の塔」シリーズの第1作です。すでに4作が刊行されており、キングの公式ホームページでは今年秋に第5作である「Wolves of the Calla」が発表されるという情報が入っており、待ち遠しい限りです。キングの中期以降の作品には、このシリーズの影響が強く出ており、特に、「IT」、「不眠症」、「アトランティスのこころ」（これはむしろ意識しすぎで難解にしていますが・・・）などがその代表といえます。第1作である本作品は、はっきり言ってやや難解であり、第2作の「ザ・スリー」や、第3作の「荒地」のほうがストーリーの展開としては面白く、読みやすいと思いますが、やはりキングのファンであれば、避けて通ることはできません。ぜひ最初から読みましょう。
大人にはハリー・ポッターより面白い！？
現在日本では4巻まで出版されています。 この第1巻は、かれこれ10年以上前の作品になるのではないでしょうか？ 映画でいうと、最初の30分くらいにあたる序章という感じで、物語の本筋が一体何なのかよく分かりません。この第一巻を読み切るのは少々しんどいですが、それに値するくらい第2巻以降のスピーディーな展開は面白いです。 p ある意味、ハリー・ポッターが子供のファンタジーなら、こちらは大人の、しかも決してハッピー・エンドは期待できないファンタジーと言えるでしょう 随分壮大なストーリーらしく、著者自身「この作品はライフワーク」と宣っております。 ファンとしては、他作に寄り道せず、続きを早く書いて欲しいと思います。
さすが
キングのライフワークというだけあって、 この暗黒の塔のシリーズでは、他の作品で登場した人物が登場したり、 集大成的なシリーズになっています。 p この第一部は、シリーズ全体のプロローグ的な作品で、 かなり、読みにくいのですが、２部以降は、展開もスピードアップし、 思わずうるうるしてしまうシーンも出てきて、俄然、面白くなります。 p キングファンの方だけでなく、ファンタジーや、 冒険ものの好きな方には、オススメのシリーズです。
