インターネット・バブルの時代にRed He ing (アメリカのハイテク・ビジネス雑誌)で著者の記事を良く読んだ。その後3年程前にWhat Should I Do With My Life?がベストセラーになったが、今回の著書では、特に有名でも何でもない多数の「普通の人々」へのインタビューをベースに、彼らが経験した人生の試練を再現し、それを通じて、家族とは何なのか?愛情とは、絆とは何のか？幸せとはどういうことなのか？を間接的に問うている。個々のストーリーは試練を乗り越えた末に必ずしもハッピーエンドな結末が待っているものばかりではないし、そこから、著者自身が明示的に何を学ぶべきかを説いているわけでもない。しかし、ストーリーに描かれている人々が境遇する様々な試練を苦しみもがきながら乗り越えていく過程で、家族の意味や絆・愛情といったものを捜し求めることを決して諦めない姿勢から、それがどんな意味を持つのかを読み手に考えさせる。仕事の忙殺から少し離れて時間のあるときなどに読むのがお勧め。

That said though, if you a e looking fo a ook that tells you what you pa tne is p o a ly feeling and gives some tips fo a new fathe , this is p o a ly the one. None of the othe ooks I ead paid any attention to fathe s even in the slightest, so it does help us guys feel a little mo e involved.

アメリカの3大ネットワークの１つであるNBCの看板番組Meet the P essの司会者を務めるTim Russe tが、清掃局と新聞配達の2つの仕事を勤勉に続けつつ、深い愛情で子供たちを育て上げてくれた父への誇りと、感謝の念を、自身の半生を軸に綴ったアメリカンストーリーです。筆者がNY州北部のバッファローで、周囲に温かく支えられながら成長していく様がユーモアたっぷりに描かれています。ケネディ大統領暗殺など、アメリカの歴史が「少年」としての筆者の視点から描かれている点もとても興味深いです。わかりやすい英語で書かれているので、一気に読めるはず。
