ハラハラ、ドキドキ、一気読み！
場所はドイツのとある小さな町。雪降りしきる寒い日のこと。 大勢の人でにぎわうWhite Ho se Tave nで小説家が語り始める怖い話。 いつしかその話は思わぬ方向へ進みだします。動き出したストーリーは 途中で止まらないのです。そう、ゼンマイ仕掛けの時計のように…。 大変面白い本です。出だしから話に引き込まれ、一気読みしてしまいました。 ちょっと怖い話ですが、どこかメルヘンチックで童話のようでもあります。 話は短くすっきりとまとまっており、英文も平易でテンポよく読めるので、 面白くて簡単な英語の本を読みたい方には特におすすめです。 ちなみに、私はＵＳ版のほうも読みましたが、どちらかといえばこちらをすすめます。 こちらがオリジナルですし、ところどころにストーリーを補足するコラムのような ものが入っています。ＵＳ版は、その補足部分がほとんど省略さ!れていました。 苦悩する時計職人、ゼンマイ仕掛けの騎士、幼い王子、飲み屋の少女、 不気味なD Kalmenius… 彼らがどんな物語を紡いでいくのか、ぜひ皆さんの目で確かめてみてください。

現代社会への警鐘
５０年以上前に書かれた本書。（日本では車や白黒テレビさえそれほど普及しておらず、トイレは汲み取り式、農作業は人力と馬なんていう時代です。）それなのに、今日、現代社会を侵食している困った問題がここまでえぐり出されているなんてすごいと思います。最近書かれた本として読んだとしても、私には何の違和感もなかったと思います。（私の読んだのは５０周年版だったので、多少時代に合うように手直しされていたのかもしれませんが・・・。） 舞台は禁書令の敷かれた未来。・・・・・・でも、その禁書令は、すでに人々が「自分の五感で感じること、じっくり読むこと、考えること」などの面倒くさいことを投げ出し、愚かにも享楽的に生きることを選んでしまったところに付け込んで始められたものだったのです。（だから、禁書令が敷かれても誰も驚きもしなかったなんて！） まさに、現代の実社会は、この本に描かれた世界の前夜的な状況です。 本書では、たまたま禁書が書かれているけれど、コトは、本だけの問題ではないのです。 もともとSFだったそうですが、今となっては、もはやSFというジャンルのものではなくて、まさに現代社会への警鐘の書だと思います。 冒険物語にわくわくする少年の年頃の人より、人生の苦みも分かり初めてきた人たちの方が、よさのよく分かる本だと思います。 いつもなら、一度読んだ本は読み返そうとは思わないズボラな私ですが、この本は読み返したくなりました。 機会があれば、日本語版の方も読んでみようと思います。

おもしろい
English 11(高2英語(国語))の授業で読みました。 私は初めてSFものを読みましたが、そんな私でもおもしろいと感じた本でした。一気に読みたくなりました。 著者の発想がすごいなと感じた本です。

ちょっと期待はずれ・・・
Clive Cussle のこれまでのDi k PittやKu t Austinのシリーズと同様のストーリー展開を期待してこの本を読み始めたところ、すぐにその期待が裏切られてしまいました。ミッション・インポッシブル的なストーリー展開（各場面展開が短くて早い）はテンポは良いのですが、軽くて奥深さがなく、前述の２シリーズに登場するSt. Julian Pe lmutte のような博識の重鎮の登場もありません。チベット、およびその周辺諸国に関する記述に数箇所誤りが見られたのも読みながら気になりました。 新しいシリーズが出たのは喜ばしいことだと思いますが、Cussle のこれまでのスタイルが大きく変わってしまったのにはため息をつかざるを得ませんでした・・・。
